Acclaimed Trinidadian artist and pilot Shannon Hutchinson captivated art enthusiasts with her exhibition, “River of Dreams,” a collection of works that explored the interplay of light, nature, colour, and emotion.
Hutchinson is a true polymath. A Renaissance woman, she built successful careers in both art and aviation, and earned the titles author, entrepreneur, philanthropist, travel pro, holistic health, wellness and beauty guru, and Carnival icon.
Shannon was known for her evocative landscapes and ethereal depictions of the natural world, combining her unique perspective as both artist and aviator to create works that transported viewers to a realm where the boundaries between earth and sky blurred. The “River of Dreams” collection continued her exploration of these themes, with pieces ranging from serene seascapes to dynamic skies. Each was a reflection of her experiences and emotions, several giving a nod to the spiritual and to local folklore.
Born and raised in Trinidad, Hutchinson’s journey as an artist was as diverse as her subject matter. She graduated from OCAD University in Toronto with a Bachelor of Fine Arts focused on Art History and Advanced Visual Studies, and earned several scholarships and prestigious awards for innovation in her thesis work in Florence, Italy. Her career as an airline pilot informed her artistic vision, allowing her to bring a unique aerial perspective to her canvases.
Hutchinson’s solo exhibitions, including “Dreamscapes,” “Weathering The Storm,” and “Chasing the Light,” received widespread acclaim, establishing her as a significant figure in the Caribbean art scene. Her work has been featured in prestigious shows and collections, including the National Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago, the Hart House Permanent Collection, and private collections across the globe.
“River of Dreams” was on display at Horizons Art Gallery, Port of Spain, Trinidad, from 3 to 14 September 2024. The exhibition offered a profound and reflective journey through Hutchinson’s dreams and memories of the Caribbean and her world of aviation.
